Beth Breyen - Royal Copenhagen - 3 Wise Men

One of today's auction buys, a bit of a messy day with buying - but I managed to get a few pieces that I wanted eventually.

I have never seen this pattern before, and I was quite surprised to find out it is a pattern by Beth Breyen for Alumina/Royal Copenhagen in the 1960s. I don't recall seeing any pattern by Beth that wasn't based in some way on a butterfly motif.

This one appears to be 3 wise men - although their beard styles make them look more like Genghis Khan in style to me.

Love colour palette and fine use of line as decoration to create pattern, as with all of Beth's work.

This is design number 138 on the butter dish shape 2823. In beautiful condition too - this work can be subject to crazing, but this piece has obviously been very well looked after.

  1. I agree- both the colors and the pattern on this piece is amazing! And the same exquisite level of detail and whimsy that I love so much about Wiinblad and Turi Gramstad Oliver.

    1. Yes it definitely has that Wiinblad/Oliver feel about it.

  2. Hi Ray...I´ve seen it before. But not live. In that case I had bought it! I love the Djengis Khan wise men ;-).
It´s really interesting to see what has made it from Denmark to Australia. Royal Copenhagen is no surprise but I´m still a bit puzzled about the Nymolle plates..../Birgitte

    1. Yes Birgitte...it is a contsant source of wonderment what makes its way to Australia - although there are quite a few Danes who settled here after WW2, and their descendents re-discovering these pieces. ...by the way you have some love pieces on your Etsy at the moment! Ray
